About Teak

Where does our Teak come from?
Nothing complements a beautiful garden like a teak garden bench.  And few things allow a family or group of friends to enjoy the experience of the garden better than a teak table and chairs.  Wood has a natural ability to coordinate with a natural setting.  Teak, in particular can withstand the elements and age with grace.

We feature only the highest quality, plantation-grown teak furniture.  It is all built from premium quality Javanese Tectona Grandis, originally called "JATI".  Unlike many types of tropical hardwood available today, mistakenly called teak, Tectona Grandis has superior qualities of grain, oil, color, strength and durability.  Plantation-grown Javanese Teak is also a renewable resource, with nearly nine times more wood planted each year than is harvested.  True Teak, unlike it's imitators, cannot grow in a tropical rainforests and is grown instead, in the dry highlands of Java, Indonesia.  Currently the world's largest exporter of Teak.
What type of maintenance does teak require?
The untreated timber is a very pleasant yellowy-brown, color when new.  If your furniture is to be used indoors, and away from a lot of natural sunlight, over a period of time, the wood will gradually become a darker shade of brown.

If your furniture is left outdoors, the effects of the sun's rays will "bleach out" the timbers natural color, gradually turning it a soft silvery grey color.  This silvery grey "patina" which develops over time gives Teak furniture a distinctive appearance, which is especially beautiful in a mature garden.  The silver grey color, resulting from this natural ageing process is considered to be very attractive.  Teak furniture left in this state is easily maintained, and needs no treatment whatsoever.  If you're looking for low maintenance, this is as good as it gets!

If your teak furniture requires cleaning this can be done with a normal household bristle brush (not too hard) and some warm mild, soapy water.  Rinse afterward with clean water.  There are also cleaners on the market which can be used.

We do not recommend the use of high pressure hoses, and steel wool or steel wire brushes should not be used.  If the furniture has some stubborn stains these can be removed by sanding lightly with a fine grain sandpaper, working only in the direction of the wood grain.  If the furniture was previously teak oiled you may wish to re-oil.  If your furniture was previously left in it's natural state, the fresh teak color exposed by sanding will soon mellow with the existing silver grey patina.
